A spokesman for Northants Police said: "This happened yesterday in Rushden Lakes at about 10.20am when two men were challenged by security at the centre for suspected shoplifting.

"The two men made off, followed by security, before getting into a white Transit van, which is then alleged to have been driven towards security, causing them to fear for their safety."

The spokesman said the vehicle was then stopped by police officers several hours later at 5.15pm on the A14 near Thrapston and a 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault.

He has since been released on bail pending further enquiries, and the spokesman added: "The van was recovered for no insurance and the driver was also reported for no insurance, tyre offences and the vehicle being in a dangerous condition."
