Staycation time ... Diary of a Corona Kid (week 11)

We’re all going on a summer holiday... but this time it will probably be a ‘staycation’. This is fine, though, because Great Britain has a lot to offer for a nice break. We have some of the richest history in the world, so why not explore this during the summer months? Additionally, we are an island, which means beaches and coastal areas that are often beautiful, albeit often slightly chilly. My favourite area is probably the east coast, for example north Norfolk, as this is our closest seaside. The plus sides of staying home this summer are that we don’t have to quarantine for the best part of a month once we arrive home from the airport. I’m not a frequent flyer myself, and I don’t tend to enjoy the queues and the rushing. Even the joys of duty-free shops are blemished with the constant need to check the board, just in case your plane has been mysteriously cancelled. So transport won’t be an issue this summer. Not many will sit on a flight refusing the delights of the catering trolley in 2020, but I do feel a bit sorry for those Brits who live in UK tourist destinations. They can’t be too happy with an influx of outsiders visiting them as they are trying to deal with the pandemic locally. Recent images of people on beaches show an apparent lack of social distancing. And what’s with leaving all that litter? The bins aren’t shut, just the toilets apparently, which raises even more even questions, but we’ll leave that one be for now. This also really begs the question of whether it is fair to visit our tourist spots at all at the moment. Maybe the ‘staycation’ will be more localised than we thought. Substituting Wicksteed Park for Legoland, and Kirby Hall for Windsor Castle?
